Hi,

I am having an issue with this tool. When opening positions using the percentage buttons (or typing in a custom percentage), the position size it opens is way off. Even taking leverage into account, it doesn't make any sense at all.

For example, on a 1:1 account (no lev), I'll click 20%, and it will open a position that's significantly larger than 20%. If typing in 50% and opening, the position is like 80% of the account? I can't seem to make any sense of it.

If I try to open 60%, it will say not enough margin, which doesn't make sense as it's supposed to be 60% of what's available? Can I have some assistance on what's going on here?

What symbol are you using and what is your account balance and broker

BTCUSD, and I have experimented with multiple demo accounts with brokers (purple, ICMarkets etc) and also with the default Ctrader demo accounts.

Have tried with 1:1 leverage accounts, and 5x and 30x. They all seem to use the incorrect amount of margin (I am aware of the difference between margin and order value with leverage)

Can you tell me the following for a single instance where you are submitting an order and feel it is incorrect.

Account balance
Leverage
The % you have set to open a trade
The trade size that opened.

Also, which button are you selecting?

For this example, I just clicked the green 20% buy button on the terminal (see attached)

You will need to make sure your broker supports Micro-lots, not all brokers allow this, you will need to use lots starting at 0.01 for symbols like Crypto & Indices, if your broker starts at 1 lot this means your minimum trade size could be very large for a small account balance.

The calculation should be 0.2 lots.

Micro lots are allowed on all the accountsI've tried, am able to place orders with 0,01 fine without the cbot (see attachment to show this). That's why I'm quite confused and can't figure out why the cbot is placing orders that are way too large

I tried it on a demo account which used Euros and it's still incorrect, but it's not as far off as it is with AUD (it is closer to being correct, but still wrong). Could this issue be related to the currency used?

A new API feature of cTrader was published recently, the calculation will be updated too.

var volume = Symbol.NormalizeVolumeInUnits((Percentage / 100.0) * Account.Balance * Symbol.DynamicLeverage[0].Leverage / AssetConverter.Convert(1, Symbol.BaseAsset, Account.Asset));

The old calculation was:

Position Size = Leverage (1:50) x Balance (£1000.00) / (bid or ask price of the asset)

I will publish an update very soon and post on here once complete.

UPDATE CT v4.6.3

The existing tool calculates the lot size based on the balance using the leverage as part of the formula, I have found the total to be around incorrect by a small amount. The lot size is based on a % of the available margin.

£658 account with a 1:500 leverage
20% position size, will use 131 available margin as shown in the positions window.

If you are using a large account size then the maximum lot by the broker is anywhere between 10-50 lots, no matter what % you use, once it's above 10-50 lots, it will open an order at the max lot size

A new version of cTrader v4.6.3 has an API to use the formula as shown in the last post, this makes the position size and leverage used more accurate.

The new update will be published when Spotware rolls out the latest version that is in Beta, if you have purchased the product you can contact sales for the updated version, but this will only work with cTrader Beta 4.6.3

Thanks for looking into this. I was actually trying the free trial (first day in) when I noticed it wasn't calculating correctly. Will it be possible to restart the trial once the new version is released? Since I can't trial the product if it's not currently functional.

I've tested out the new version by opening a 20% position, but it seems to be trying and failing to buy 15.72 btc on an account with $98,954 AUD. I'm on version 4.6.3, or does it need to be a specific beta version of it?

If you are using no leverage then this may be the issue, I will test. do not think we ever tested on an account with 1:1 leverage.

I tested with an account size of £99,999 and submitted a 20% order, this provided a margin of 20,000 which is 20% of the balance, I used the leverage of 1:400.

Yeah the demo I tested with is with no leverage. This will be quite common though as FTMO has no leverage on swing accounts for all Cryptocurrencies

The issue outlined above was using the regular Ctrader platform, connected to an ICMarkets account
